# Domain Already Registered by Another Account

## Overview

When you add a domain to Resend, you may see this error: `The example.com domain has been registered already`.

This means the domain is associated with a different Resend account. A domain can only be active on one Resend account at a time.

## Why This Happens

Common reasons a domain may already be registered:

- A team member or contractor added it to a separate account.
- You are logged in to a different account than the one where the domain was originally added.

## How to Resolve It

### Check your existing accounts first

1. Check with your team to see if someone is already using Resend.
2. Make sure you're logged in to the right account.

### Claim the domain

If the domain belongs to a different team and you can prove ownership, you can claim it through a self-serve process:

1. Go to [Domains](https://resend.com/domains) and click **Add Domain**.
2. Enter the domain name and submit the form.
3. A prompt will appear explaining that the domain is in use by another Resend team. Click **Start claim** to begin.
4. Add the DNS TXT record provided to your domain's DNS settings to prove ownership.

The claim expires in 7 days. If you started a claim previously, you can pick up where you left off by submitting the same domain name again and clicking **Continue claim**.
